How to Recover from a Knee Sprain Quickly and Without Pain
If you’re wondering how to heal a knee sprain faster, here are the key steps from physiotherapy to help you speed up your recovery safely and effectively.
To recover properly, it’s essential to achieve four main goals:
- Relieve pain
- Control inflammation
- Regain strength
- Restore joint stability
The sooner you reach these milestones, the sooner you’ll be back to your normal routine. If you still don’t have the tools for at-home recovery, check out our knee injury rehabilitation kit, which includes everything you need for every phase of healing.
Acute Phase: Cold, Compression, and Elevation
In the first days after injury, controlling inflammation is your top priority. You’ll need:
- A cold pack or reusable gel ice pack
- An elastic bandage to hold the ice in place
- A compression bandage to reduce swelling
Step by step:
- Wrap the compression bandage around the knee to protect the skin
- Lie down in bed (avoid sitting on a chair, as the foot is usually lower than the hip)
- Elevate your leg using pillows, or better yet, use our leg elevation pillow, which is inflatable, tall, and easy to move from bed to sofa
- Place the cold pack on the swollen area and secure it with the elastic bandage
⏱️ Apply cold therapy for 20 minutes, then remove it for 20 minutes. Repeat as often as needed throughout the day, especially within the first 72 hours. After this period, continue using cold only if swelling returns after activity.
Stability Without Pain: Use a Knee Brace and Crutches
As inflammation decreases and pain becomes manageable, it’s time to start moving without risking further injury.
- Use a knee brace to provide stability, relieve pain, and prevent aggravation
- Crutches can also help you offload pressure from the injured leg
The brace should only be worn during the day for active movement. Do not wear it while sleeping or during basic household tasks. In later recovery stages, it can be worn for high-demand activities like sports, work, gym, or dancing, until the knee fully recovers.
Active Phase: Strength and Mobility Exercises
Once the acute phase has passed, you’ll need to regain muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance in the injured leg.
Follow our physiotherapist-developed knee sprain exercise video, which includes 4 progressive exercises you can do daily. They are updated every two weeks as long as you don’t experience pain.
Goals of this phase:
- Improve muscle strength
- Restore range of motion
- Prepare the knee to return to daily and athletic activities
You’ll find everything you need to perform the exercises at home in our knee injury rehabilitation kit.
